Derby Market Hall adjusts opening hours to better serve community and traders
Mon 15 Sep 2025
Starting from Monday 22 September, the Market Hall will close on Mondays and extend its hours on Sundays. Due to the popularity of weekends, Sunday opening hours will now be 10am until 6pm, effective from Sunday 28 September. The current Sunday hours are 11am until 3pm.
The decision has been made after carefully monitoring footfall and gathering feedback from both the public and market vendors. The changes are designed to create a more vibrant and sustainable experience for everyone.
The iconic Market Hall reopened in May after a £35.1 million restoration, creating a vibrant hub that brings together the region's best independent shops, eateries, bars, and entertainment all under one beautiful roof.
New opening hours
The new opening hours will be:
· Monday: Closed
· Tuesday: 8am – 3pm
· Wednesday: 8am – 3pm
· Thursday: 8am – 10pm
· Friday: 8am – 10pm
· Saturday: 8am – 10pm
· Sunday: 10am – 6pm
New Quiet Hours sessions
To ensure the Market Hall is a welcoming environment for everyone, ‘Quiet Hours’ will be introduced every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am –10am. During this time, music will be turned off and announcement volumes will be reduced to create a calmer environment for customers with sensory sensitivities or those who prefer a quieter shopping experience.
Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council and Cabinet Member for City Centre, Regeneration, Strategy and Policy, said:
We've listened to our customers and traders, and have decided to alter Derby Market Hall’s opening hours slightly. Mondays are typically on the quieter side, while visitors enjoying a Sunday afternoon at the Market Hall aren’t ready to leave at 3pm!
It’s also really important to us that the Market Hall works for our brilliant independent traders. Many of them are small operations, and opening seven days a week isn’t always feasible. Closing on Mondays allows them to manage their business and maintain consistent opening times for customers while hopefully having some well-deserved time off.
The transformation of the Market Hall was a huge landmark for the city centre, and we are proactively monitoring how things are going in these early days to make any changes needed to ensure its long-term success. We’re always looking for ways to improve and, as part of our commitment to accessibility, we’re excited to introduce ‘Quiet Hours’ to make sure all visitors feel comfortable.
Derby Market Hall is gearing up for an incredible new season of events, including Osnabrück Oktoberfest, Derby Feste, Halloween fun and a new monthly student night.
